How best to protect your hair from the sun

It’s been so beautiful over the last week with the sun beaming down on the UK but are you looking after your hair? Sun damage can come in the form of discolouration, dry and brittle strands, broken or split ends, thinning and frizziness. None of which we’re keen on. Here are five tips to follow in the summer months…

Wear a hat

It seems like an obvious one but the best way to protect your hair is to cover it up altogether! Straw hats aren't as protective as tightly woven ones. Bonus points if you opt for a brand that carries hats with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) number!

Don’t overwash your hair

The hair’s natural oils actually act as a protectant to the scalp so it’s best not to shampoo your hair too often. Limit wash sessions and instead use a dry shampoo such as Phil Smith Be Gorgeous Coco Licious Dry Shampoo which has the added bonus of having a summery, tropical scent.

Prevent Damage with a Hair Mask

Being outside in the sunshine can leave your hair feeling thirsty and dry. Use the Phil Smith Magic Potion as a mask. Slather your hair in the product and leave it for at least 20 minutes to ensure that all the magical goodness is absorbed.

Protect the hair post-swim

After leaving the pool or the sea, create a protective barrier for the hair with an oil such as Phil Smith Be Gorgeous Coco Licious Nourishing Coconut Oil. Apply the oil onto your mid ends to tips and put the hair up in a bun to help lock in the moisture.

Steer clear of extra heat

Try to use hot tools less during the summer months as they’ll only further dry out your hair. Naturally wavy hair is a far more beachy vibe, anyway!
